Kanvar Yatra 2013 at Haridwar

Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage of Shiva devotees. People from different parts of country travel to Haridwar,Gangotri and Gaumukh.  They cover a large distance by walking barefoot and fetch the holy water Ganga from these places. The people who are a part of this yatra are called as Kanwarias. This name is inspired from word ‘Kanvar’. Kanwar means a single pole, to the end of which are hanging two pots to carry something (water). It is normally carried on the shoulder, such that the middle of the pole is exactly on the shoulder.

Kanwarias carry this pole to Haridwar,Gangotri and Gaumukh. They collect gange water from these places and store in pots. While returning with water utmost care is to be taken. The pots should not touch the ground. All this is done to fetch the holy water for Ganga Jal Abhishekam to Lord Shiva during Shravan.
